The rectangle plate is meant to be placed inside the phone case, while the circular plate has a sticky surface to adhere to the outside of the Smartphone. Nettohome did indicate that thicker mobile phone cases like an Otterbox make it very difficult for any magnet to hold a phone including Nettohome's. The company also indicated they increased the size of the magnet which is part of the car phone stand. This higher quality magnet was designed to hold virtually any universal mobile phone provided the phone case is not too thick, or the phone is not too heavy.
The other main part is the suction device that allows the car mount to attach to the windshield or dashboard. Nettohome's suction was designed to be stronger and therefore hold the mount rigidly to a windshield or dashboard. The company recently indicated that many users have attached the car mount to the windshield for months and it remains strong and in place.
